Batch-add categories
Batch adding categories
RSDirectory! offers the possibility to add multiple categories at the same time by specifying, if needed, a category tree containing an unlimited number of subcategory levels, greatly improving your workflow by reducing the time required to add each category, should your directory require a large number of categories / subcategories. To trigger this functionality, click on the Batch Add button to the top-right side. A page similar to the one in the screenshot to the right will be opened:
You will need to provide the following information:
- Parent: Select a parent (from among the already existing categories) for the category tree that you are about to create. Default: - No parent - .
- Form: Assign a form to the specified categories. If set to - Inherited -, the categories will inherit the form set for their parent category (if any)
- Categories: The text area where you need to specify your categories / category tree. Below, you will find an example of a category tree spanning 3 levels: top level, 1st level and 2nd level:
Electronics - Computers, Tablets & Networking -- iPad/Tablet/eBook Readers -- iPad/Tablet/eBook Accessories -- Laptops & Netbooks -- Desktops & All-In-Ones Entertainment - Video Games & Consoles - Books - Music - DVDs & Movies
Explanation
- The Electronics and Entertainment categories are top-level.
- Computers, Tablets & Networking and Video Games & Consoles are 1st level, their parents being Electronics and Entertainment (the top-level categories). Note that they are specified in the category tree using a single - (dash) character.
- The rest of the categories, like iPad/Tablet/eBook Readers or Books, are 2nd level. Their parents are either Computers, Tablets & Networking or Video Games & Consoles. Note that they are specified using 2 - (dash) characters.
By specifying a parent category, in the Parent dropdown, the top-level categories will be rendered as 1st level categories, shifting their children's levels by 1 (level 1 becomes 2, 2 becomes 3, and so on).
Basically, you need to describe the category tree, just as you want it to be generated, by adding each category on a new line and specifying its level using dashes.
