TOPIC: show caption in results only if field is populated

I'm trying to create a form with optional text fields where the caption only shows in the submitted email if they have been populated.
I submitted a support ticket and got this reply :

You will need to place the placeholders of the field (label and value) in a span that has an unique id, then use a custom javascript in order to check if the span contains a value (returned by the value placeholder of the field). If it does then the span will be displayed, otherwise it will be hidden.

As I have no JS experience, i'm not sure how to achieve this. Any help would be greatly appreciated
